On your big-screen TV, they look nearly identical, and you most likely cannot tell the difference.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NFL players, though, can tell the difference. It was the home of the Houston Astros, the Major League Baseball expansion franchise. They learned in 1965 that grass would not grow well indoors.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The success of the artificial grass in the dome led to it being rebranded AstroTurf.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That new infield looked green, but it had none of the forgiveness that grass did. Some players found that the artificial turf gave them more traction, but that traction came at the cost of the field\u2019s surface being much harder.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both in baseball and football, knee and leg injuries spiked as teams transitioned from grass to artificial turf.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turf and grass have both improved in the past half-century. Today&#8217;s synthetic systems are rated by speed and firmness, and makers say they&#8217;re easier on the body than older versions. Even so, there&#8217;s no league-wide agreement on which surface is best.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Read more<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/lawnlove.com\/blog\/guide-to-grass-types\/\">An Ultimate Guide to Grass Types<\/a><\/p>    <h2 id=\"2-the-injury-case-against-turf\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Injury Case Against Turf<\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 2022\u2019s Super Bowl, Los Angeles Rams wide receiver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/33284663\/los-angeles-rams-wide-receiver-odell-beckham-jr-questionable-return-suffering-leg-injury\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Odell Beckham Jr. suffered a torn ACL<\/a> in his left knee during the second quarter. The field was artificial turf.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The injury raised concerns about the venue, the Rams\u2019 SoFi Stadium. That\u2019s because Beckham\u2019s injury came not as a result of a tackle or a collision. Rather, while wide-open running a crossing pattern, the cleats on Beckham\u2019s left foot got caught in SoFi\u2019s artificial turf. His ACL gave way.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artificial turf has a troubling history at all levels of play.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using the NFL&#8217;s own injury reports from 2012\u20132018, the NFL Players Association found players have a 28% higher rate of non-contact lower-extremity injuries on artificial turf, including a 69% higher rate of non-contact foot\/ankle injuries.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhhospitals.org\/for-clinicians\/articles-and-news\/articles\/2019\/08\/artificial-turf-versus-natural-grass\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2019 study out of Cleveland-based University Hospitals<\/a> said that high school players \u2013 boys and girls \u2013 playing sports on turf fields suffered 58% more injuries than those playing on natural grass fields.<\/p>    <h2 id=\"3-players-and-execs-make-the-case-for-grass\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Players and Execs Make the Case for Grass<\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2022, grass seed maker Pennington took to the Super Bowl ad airwaves to make its case for a return to natural turf with a #FlipTheTurf petition. The campaign brought attention to the issue, but the company also had an obvious financial incentive should NFL teams make the switch from artificial turf to natural grass.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the company\u2019s move would seem to be a good business ploy, the players\u2019 motivation seems to come from self-preservation.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, NFL players have been openly pleading for a return to grass. San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle went on Twitter to write, \u201cArtificial turf feels like playing on cement,\u201d linking it with a #FlipTheTurf hashtag.<\/p>   <blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"> <p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udc40I\u2019ve been saying, artificial turf feels like playing on cement. Tretter<\/a>, the Cleveland Browns center who currently serves as the executive director of the NFL Players Association, plays home games on Kentucky bluegrass at Huntington Bank Field. He\u2019d like to see the 17 teams currently playing home games on artificial surfaces migrate toward grass.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur occupation is dangerous enough,\u201d Tretter says, adding that a move to all-grass fields is one of the players\u2019 key issues.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/injuries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NFL\u2019s official injury reports<\/a> from the seasons 2012-2018, Tretter made a case on the NFLPA\u2019s website that natural grass fields provide a much lower risk for injuries.<\/p>   <blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"> <p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our union has to keep advocating for player health and safety in all areas. After Tretter\u2019s 2020 call for grass, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch, said he would like to see a large majority of NFL teams find fulfillment in natural grass.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His 49ers have. San Francisco\u2019s experiences with artificial surfaces have been painful. In that 2020 season, Lynch\u2019s 49ers had lost not just Bosa but also defensive tackle Solomon Thomas to season-ending ACL injuries in that artificial turf game against the Jets.<\/p>    <h2 id=\"4-the-worththecost-campaign\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The #WorthTheCost Campaign<\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">#FlipTheTurf remains part of the debate\u2019s history, but #WorthTheCost is the latest player-led message.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The campaign surged this summer during the World Cup, when NFL players saw stadiums that normally use artificial turf install grass for the soccer matches. The NFLPA said the temporary fields showed that owners can provide natural grass when they decide it is worth the investment.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For NFL owners, the hesitation to switch permanently largely comes down to cost and versatility:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Natural grass costs<\/strong>: Maintaining a natural grass field runs $1 million or more annually with mid-season sod replacements adding $250,000 to $500,000 per swap.<\/li>    <li><strong>Artificial turf costs<\/strong>: Synthetic fields require far less routine upkeep, running roughly $15,000 to $25,000 per year.
