It causes large, circular-shaped patches of brown grass on your lawn, giving the disease its popular name.<\/p>    <p>Brown patch develops rapidly and typically appears in the late spring and summer, when the weather is hot and humid. So how can you tell if the brown patches on your lawn are due to a fungal disease? We interviewed Peter Landschoot, professor emeritus and turfgrass expert at Penn State University, to help us answer this question.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>Here are the tell-tale signs and symptoms of brown patch disease:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Brown circles appear on your grass:<\/strong> Landschoot explains that brown patch fungus typically shows up as patches of circular, light brown grass, which can be a few inches to a few feet wide.&nbsp; The area in the center might recover and green up again, forming a \u201cdoughnut\u201d shape.<\/li>    <li><strong>Smoky rings:<\/strong> These circles usually have a grey perimeter (popularly called a \u201csmoke ring\u201d) that is more apparent during the early morning hours.&nbsp;<\/li>    <li><strong>White mycelium (fungal threads):<\/strong> White fungal threads that look like leftover bits of cotton candy appear on the leaves of grass first thing in the morning.<\/li>    <li><strong>Tan lesions (discolored spots) on leaf blades: <\/strong>Irregular, light brown spots with a dark brown perimeter may appear on grass blades. According to Landschoot, this is a tell-tale sign of brown patch: \u201cLesions with dark brown borders are <strong>not<\/strong> present on dry grass and dog-pee spots.\u201d<\/li> <\/ul>    <p>Signs of brown patch differ based on its severity, Landschoot says. In mild cases, the area may thin out, and the blades may have only mild browning. Other conditions that favor brown patch include:&nbsp;<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/signs-compacted-soil\/\">Compacted soil<\/a><\/li>    <li>Excessive thatch<\/li>    <li>Excessively thick lawns<\/li>    <li>Overwatering and watering in the evening<\/li>    <li>Cloudy weather&nbsp;<\/li>    <li>Heavy dew<\/li>    <li>Lack of airflow<\/li>    <li>Frayed grass blades (typically caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/lawn-mowing-mistakes\/#1-2-mowing-with-dull-blades\">mowing with dull mower blades<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/why-you-shouldnt-mow-wet-grass\/\">mowing when the lawn is wet<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-where-and-when-brown-patch-disease-occurs\">Where and When Brown Patch Disease Occurs<\/h2>    <p><strong>Where brown patch occurs:<\/strong> Brown patch occurs more commonly in areas where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/cool-season-grass-growing-guide\/\">cool-season turf<\/a> grows: northern states and states in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/guide-to-growing-grass-in-the-transition-zone\/\">transition zone<\/a>.<\/p>    <p><strong>When brown patch occurs: <\/strong>Brown patch appears during periods of prolonged heat and humidity, when nighttime air temperatures rise above 65 F to 70 F and dew periods exceed 10 hours.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>The exact time will vary according to your region\u2019s weather. In midwestern and northern states, for example, brown patch shows up during summer. In the southernmost states, it starts in late spring and can even happen during warmer months in the winter.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-what-type-of-grass-is-most-susceptible-to-brown-patch\">What Type of Grass is Most Susceptible to Brown Patch?<\/h2>    <p>Cool-season grasses are the most susceptible to brown patch, especially:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/grass-guides\/tall-fescue-lawn-maintenance-guide\/\">Tall fescue<\/a><\/li>    <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/perennial-ryegrass\/\">Perennial ryegrass<\/a><\/li>    <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/how-to-grow-creeping-bentgrass\/\">Bentgrasses<\/a><\/li> <\/ul>    <p>According to Landschoot, tall fescue and perennial ryegrass are the 2 grass types that are most susceptible to brown patch fungus. Occasionally, brown patch can also affect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/kentucky-bluegrass\/\">Kentucky bluegrass<\/a>, but this turf tends to be more resistant to this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/common-lawn-diseases\/\">common lawn disease<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-prevention-and-treatment\">Prevention and Treatment<\/h2>    <p>You can prevent brown patch naturally by adapting your lawn care practices:&nbsp;<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/how-to-mow-a-lawn\/\">Mow properly<\/a><\/li>    <li>Avoid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/signs-of-overwatering-lawn\/\">overwatering<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>    <li>Perform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/what-is-aeration-video\/\">lawn aeration<\/a> to improve drainage&nbsp;<\/li>    <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/how-to-fertilize-lawn\/\">Fertilize properly<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>    <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/when-to-dethatch-lawn\/\">Dethatch<\/a> when necessary<\/li> <\/ul>    <p>Some of the main ways to treat an existing brown patch problem:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Reduce moisture<\/strong>, or even pause your watering routine. When the grass starts to show signs of drought stress, Landschoot recommends watering in the early morning hours so the grass can dry before nightfall.<\/li>    <li><strong>Improve air circulation<\/strong> by aerating or dethatching (if you have excessive thatch).<\/li>    <li><strong>Apply<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/reviews\/best-lawn-fungicides\/\">fungicides<\/a><\/li>    <li><strong>Mow higher<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>    <li><strong>Avoid fertilizing<\/strong> during an active brown patch problem. In areas where brown patch is common, incorporate Kentucky bluegrass and\/or fine fescue into the seed mix since these are less susceptible to brown patch.<\/em><\/p>    <p><em>Timing is also critical: \u201cAvoid seeding cool-season turfgrasses in summer, as young seedlings have little to no resistance to the brown patch pathogen,\u201d he says.<\/em><\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-faq\">FAQ<\/h2>    <div class=\"schema-faq wp-block-yoast-faq-block\"><div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1761958350103\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">Is Brown Patch Disease Contagious to Other Plants in My Yard?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Yes, the <em>Rhizoctonia solani <\/em>fungus (which causes brown patch disease) can spread and affect other plants in your yard. It can infect other plants through contact with contaminated soil, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/reasons-to-use-grass-clippings-as-mulch\/\">grass clippings<\/a>, or lawn care equipment.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1761958355890\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">Can Brown Patch Disease Kill My Entire Lawn?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Although brown patch can cause extensive damage, it will rarely kill the grass because this fungus doesn\u2019t kill the turf\u2019s crown. However, if favorable conditions are ongoing and no action is taken to treat it, brown patch can end up killing cool-season lawns.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1761958362790\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">How Quickly Does Brown Patch Disease Spread?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Brown patch spreads very rapidly. The patches of wilted grass can develop within 24 to 48 hours.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1761958369806\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">Is it Safe for Pets and Children to Play on Grass Affected by Brown Patch?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">The <em>Rhizoctonia solani<\/em> fungus is not known to cause infections in pets or humans.
