Take these measures to prepare your lawn for your guests:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Mow taller within the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/how-to-mow-a-lawn\/#1-proper-mowing-height\">mowing height range for your grass type<\/a>: Longer grass blades create deeper roots and can recover more quickly from the foot traffic of an outdoor event. Remember <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/what-is-one-third-rule-mowing-grass\/\">never to cut more than 1\/3<\/a> of your grass\u2019s total height in one mow.<\/li>    <li><strong>Stop watering a week before the event:<\/strong> A dry lawn prevents muddy shoes for you and your guests, but there are also benefits to your lawn. <br><br>James Murphy, Extension specialist at Rutgers University, says, \u201cA week or so before the event, withhold or greatly reduce irrigation to dry out the soil and lawn. The lawn and soil will be more tolerant of traffic from the event when conditions are dry.\u201d<br><br>But he cautions that \u201cdry\u201d doesn\u2019t mean \u201cstressed.\u201d <br><br>\u201cDon&#8217;t allow so much drying that the turf is under severe drought stress,\u201d he says.<\/li>    <li><strong>Treat with fungicides a week before:<\/strong> Preventing disease means your lawn won&#8217;t have the added stress of disease pressure after your event.<br><br>\u201cIf rainy and hot weather is expected leading up to or during the event, it would be prudent to protect the lawn from diseases by applying fungicide a week prior to the event,\u201d says Murphy.<\/li> <\/ul>    <p><strong>Note: <\/strong>Also take this opportunity to protect your guests from pesky mosquitoes. That way, you\u2019ll distribute the traffic better. If you\u2019re hosting a barbecue, for example, spread tables and chairs on your outdoor patio so your guests can sit in a different area from where you are cooking.&nbsp;<\/li>    <li><strong>Protect vulnerable areas: <\/strong>If you have vulnerable areas that are supposed to remain untouched, such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/landscaping\/how-to-build-pollinator-garden\/\">pollinator garden<\/a> or cultivated veggies, protect the area by putting up a sign, plaque, or some type of fencing around it.<\/li>    <li><strong>Use lightweight furniture and decorations: <\/strong>Count on chairs and tables made of plastic or other lightweight materials to help prevent pressure spots on your lawn.&nbsp;<br><br>The same applies to your decor: Choose freestanding, lightweight decorations \u2014 items that you can hang on your trees or fencing and easily remove after your event (balloons, flags, string lights).<\/li> <\/ul>    <p>It\u2019s also important to know that the unexpected might happen. Robert Polomski, Extension specialist at Clemson University, shared with us his recent experience hosting a wedding rehearsal dinner with 40 guests:&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>\u201cI did my best to predict the movement patterns of the guests and to identify high traffic areas. Serious lawn owners could purchase geotextile fabrics or specialized interlocking flooring systems that protect the grass but allow for light and water penetration.\u201d<\/p>    <p>But don\u2019t leave lawn coverings on too long, especially in summer.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>\u201cThese materials should not cover the lawn for more than a few days at most (the shorter the better),&#8221; Murphy says. &#8220;Lawns will tolerate covering when air and soil temperatures are cool; risk of severe damage from coverings is greatest when temperatures are hot and the covering is directly exposed to full sun.\u201d<\/p>    <p><strong>Note: <\/strong>For areas where you won\u2019t lay a temporary surface, such as the spaces in between activity zones, you can spread <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/landscaping\/types-of-mulch\/#1-organic-mulch-types\">organic mulch<\/a> or stepping stones to protect the grass around them. Such materials will help distribute the weight and protect your soil from compaction.<\/p>    <p><strong><em>Pro Tip:<\/em><\/strong><em> Is rain in the forecast? <\/em><em>Temporary lawn protections can also be useful <\/em><strong>before<\/strong><em> the event.<\/em><\/p>    <p><em>\u201cIf you anticipate rain a day or two before the event, some of these high-traffic areas can be protected with a tarp, especially on slow-draining clay soils,\u201d&nbsp; Polomski says.<\/em><\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-during-the-event-take-active-measures\">During the Event: Take Active Measures<\/h2>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-set-up-smart-stations\">Set up Smart Stations<\/h3>    <p>Try setting up activity areas throughout the yard so foot traffic is dispersed. Make separate stations for:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Cooking food<\/li>    <li>Eating food<\/li>    <li>Dancing<\/li>    <li>Sitting back and socializing<\/li>    <li>Kids\u2019 playground<\/li> <\/ul>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-create-clear-traffic-patterns\">Create Clear Traffic Patterns<\/h3>    <p>By creating clear traffic patterns you can direct foot traffic away from the areas you intend to preserve. Lay down rocks, plywood, old carpets or ground protection mats to create temporary walkways that will help direct your guests and prevent them from walking all over your grass.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7-manage-immediate-issues\">Manage Immediate Issues<\/h3>    <p>If you\u2019re planning on hosting multiple events, one followed by another, you can prevent pressure spots and compacted soil by rotating your setup. Change the location of your chairs and tables by moving them to areas you didn\u2019t use before so the grass under these items can recover.<\/p>    <p>For alcoholic beverage spills, try to address them right away by rinsing the area with water to dilute the alcohol. If you can\u2019t water that spot during the event, you can do it right after your guests leave.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"8-after-the-event-recovery-care\">After the Event: Recovery Care<\/h2>    <figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/aeration.jpg\" alt=\"Pile of plugs of soil removed from sports field. First, throw leftover veggies in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/what-can-you-put-in-compost-bin\/\">compost bin<\/a>.<\/p>    <p>Next, \u201cremove chairs, tables, and debris from the lawn to evaluate its condition. Thin or bare areas in high-traffic areas, puddling or ponding, runoff after irrigation, and shallow-rooted grasses are indications of compaction,\u201d Polomski says.\u00a0<\/p>    <p>He also recommends taking the opportunity to check for signs of lawn weeds.<\/p>    <p>\u201cThe reduced pore space, which impedes the movement of air, water, and nutrients to grass roots, favors these opportunists,\u201d he says.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"10-address-soil-compaction\">Address Soil Compaction<\/h3>    <p>To relieve soil compaction, lightly rake the lawn after your party to lift up matted grass and relieve compaction. If you haven\u2019t already, take this opportunity to aerate your lawn if you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/warm-season-grass-growing-guide\/\">warm-season grass<\/a> (as late spring or early summer is the best time to aerate warm-season lawns). If you don&#8217;t need to overseed, you can apply a regular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/what-is-slow-release-fertilizer\/\">slow-release nitrogen fertilizer<\/a> to strengthen your turf.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>Also, remember to fertilize at least once a year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/how-to-fertilize-lawn\/\">Fertilizing your lawn<\/a> is an important step to strengthen your grass, as it adds the necessary nitrogen and other nutrients required to keep your turf in good shape and capable of recovering from damage.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"13-water\">Water<\/h3>    <p>Get back to your regular watering schedule (unless you overseeded, in which case you\u2019ll need to water more frequently). The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/best-time-to-water-your-grass\/\">best time to water your lawn<\/a> is between 5 a.m and 9 a.m. Aim to water your lawn with around 1 inch of water per week. You can do 2 weekly watering sessions of 30 minutes each using 1\/2 inch of water, and you\u2019re all set.<\/p>    <p><strong><em>Pro Tip: <\/em><\/strong><em>If you\u2019ve done everything above and your grass isn\u2019t bouncing back, check your soil.<\/em><br><br><em>According to Polomski, \u201cHealthy soil is the foundation for healthy plants.
