Meanwhile, small-city charm comes with space to spare, with each of our<strong> bottom 10 cities<\/strong> boasting <strong>populations under 50,000<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p><strong>California <\/strong>and <strong>New Jersey <\/strong>might be breaking the hearts of gardeners when it comes to <strong>yard size<\/strong>. With <strong>17 <\/strong>Garden State Cities and <strong>10<\/strong> from the Golden State landing in the <strong>top 150<\/strong>, finding space to plant love \u2014 or even a rose bush \u2014 could be a challenge.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Highlights<br><\/h3>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>The <strong>top 97 cities <\/strong>have an average yard size of <strong>less than 0.1 acres<\/strong>. If space is your love language, head to the bottom of our ranking. <strong>Carney, MD, <\/strong>(No. 2,000) and <strong>Linton Hall, VA, <\/strong>(No. 1,999) stand alone as the only cities with <strong>yards averaging over 1 acre<\/strong>.<br><\/li>    <li>Nearly every city in <strong>Delaware<\/strong>, <strong>Rhode Island<\/strong>, and <strong>Vermont <\/strong>found their spots in the <strong>top half<\/strong> of our ranking \u2014 except <strong>Dover, DE, <\/strong>(No. 1,089), <strong>Cranston, RI, <\/strong>(No. 1,444), and <strong>Middletown, DE, <\/strong>(No. 1,727), which boast more breathing room.<br><\/li>    <li><strong>Room to Roam in the South: <\/strong>If you\u2019re looking for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/studies\/cities-with-biggest-yards\/\">spacious yard<\/a>, <strong>Texas <\/strong>and <strong>North Carolina<\/strong> are the places to be. Both states had <strong>15 cities <\/strong>land in the bottom <strong>150 of our ranking<\/strong> \u2014 meaning bigger yards and plenty of space to spread out.&nbsp;<br><\/li>    <li><strong>From \u201cFarm-to-Table\u201d to \u201cPatio-to-Plate\u201d: <\/strong>All but the <strong>bottom 150 cities<\/strong> in our ranking average yards <strong>smaller than the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/todayshomeowner.com\/lawn-garden\/guides\/average-yard-size\/#:~:text=The%20current%20national%20average%20yard%20size%20is%C2%A023%2C301%C2%A0square%20feet%20or%C2%A0a%20half%20an%20acre.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>national average<\/strong><\/a> of half an acre. In the Southern newer cities like Tampa, it\u2019s not as important. We have tons of master-planned communities with tiny yards. People are used to lot sizes 40 by 100 in starter homes. 50 by 100 is a decent bigger lot in those newer neighborhoods.<\/p> <p><strong>What are your top three tips for managing a large lawn?<\/strong><\/p> <p>1. Get a good lawn person with big equipment.<\/p> <p>2. If you try to do it yourself, make sure you have plenty of free time and energy.<\/p> <p>3. If in Florida, summertime is brutal, and the grass grows very fast with the rain.<\/p> <p><strong>What is one way to make a small backyard seem bigger?<\/strong><\/p> <p>Do not clutter. Keep it open. Fences actually help small yards out a lot and make it very private.<\/p> <p><strong>What are three pieces of lawn care equipment necessary for maintaining a big property?<\/strong><\/p> <p>1. Lawn mower.<\/p> <p>2. Weed eater.<\/p> <p>3. Edger.<\/p> <p>4. Leafblower.<\/p> <p>You need all four. A hedge trimmer is helpful too.<\/p> <p><strong>Some homeowners associations (HOAs) pay for front yard maintenance. Is this worth the HOA fee?<\/strong><\/p> <p>Townhome HOAs usually cover lawn care. Single-family home (SFH) HOAs rarely cover the lawn.<\/p> <p>It depends on your yard size and how busy your schedule is. Usually, the ones that cover yard maintenance have smaller lots. Compare the HOA fee with your own cost of lawn maintenance to decide.<\/p> <p>A lot of times the communities with HOA covering lawns also charge for cable and other community expenses, and HOA fees tend to be pretty high.<\/p>             <\/div>            <\/div>          <\/div>              <\/div> <\/div>  <p><a class=\"js-anchor\" id=\"methodology\"><\/a><\/p>   <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Methodology<\/h2>    <p>First, we determined the factors (metrics) that are most relevant to rank the Lawn-Liest Cities in America. We then gathered the average yard acreage for each of the 2,000 biggest U.S. cities from the Federal Housing Finance Agency.<\/p>    <p>Finally, we calculated scores (out of 100 points) for each city to determine its rank.
