Voles live in burrows below the surface and settle in areas with dense vegetation.<\/strong><\/p>    <p>Moles are nearly blind mammals and spend most of their lives underground, tunneling for food.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>They live in:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Underground tunnels up to 24 inches deep<\/li>    <li>Loose, rich, moist soil that is easy to dig and abounds with grubs, insects, and worms&nbsp;<\/li>    <li>Crop fields, forests, meadows, grasslands<\/li>    <li>Well-maintained lawns and gardens<\/li> <\/ul>    <p>Moles can not survive in hard, arid soil, so they\u2019ll move toward irrigated areas during dry weather.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>\u201cMore often it is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uaex.uada.edu\/publications\/pdf\/FSA-9095.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">best-maintained yards<\/a> that have the worst mole problems,\u201d says Rebeca McPeake, professor and extension wildlife specialist at the University of Arkansas.<\/p>    <p>Like moles, voles shelter, store food, and breed in underground burrows. Moles are solitary and damage the lawns more in spring and fall.<\/strong><\/p>    <p>Here\u2019s what to remember about mole behavior.<\/p>    <p><strong>Solitary:<\/strong> Moles are solitary, territorial, and not very prolific. They have 2 to 6 babies yearly, and the young move out after a month. A population of 4 to 5 moles per acre is considered high.<\/p>    <p><strong>Fast diggers: <\/strong>Moles can dig <a href=\"https:\/\/hgic.clemson.edu\/factsheet\/how-to-tell-the-difference-between-moles-voles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">up to 150 feet of tunnels per day<\/a> (about half the length of a football field). Even if your lawn looks like a construction site, it\u2019s probably only one or two moles doing the damage. If you damage an active tunnel, moles will repair it.<\/p>    <p><strong>Hide underground:<\/strong> Yard moles rarely get above ground, though you might spot them in the spring when they are looking for mates.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p><strong>Most active spring and fall:<\/strong> They are most active near the surface in spring and fall when earthworms and grubs squirm in the topsoil. During summer and winter, they dig deep tunnels to hide from drought and frost, and you might think they left your property.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p><strong>Long lifespan: <\/strong>Ground moles live for 3 to 6 years.<\/p>    <p>Vole&#8217;s behavior is different. Here are the highlights:<\/p>    <p><strong>Large families: <\/strong>Voles live in groups and are prolific breeders. They produce up to 5 litters annually, with an average of 3 to 6 babies per litter. Vole populations peak <a href=\"https:\/\/agri.nv.gov\/uploadedfiles\/agrinvgov\/content\/protection\/resource_protection\/voles.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">once every 2 to 5 years<\/a>, reaching a few hundred voles per acre, then decreasing again.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p><strong>Hide below and above the ground:<\/strong> Voles travel their surface runways daily looking for food, but you rarely see them. They are tiny, fast, blend easily with their surroundings, and always travel hidden by vegetation.<\/p>    <p><strong>Active under cover:<\/strong> Voles are active year-round but don\u2019t like to feed in the open. They\u2019ll spend more time above ground from spring to fall. It\u2019s when the vegetation is tall, and they can hide under its cover.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>During dry winters, voles reduce surface activity and retreat in their burrows. Still, if it\u2019s a snowy season, they\u2019ll extend their runways more than ever, feeling safe from predators under the snow blanket. Moles (M for meat-eaters) eat insects, larvae, and earthworms.<\/strong><\/p>    <p>Voles are primarily vegetarian.<\/p>    <p>\u201cHigh-protein grasses and legumes are their favorite foods,\u201d says Charles Dixon, Extension Associate Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries at the University of Tennessee.<\/p>    <p>Their diet includes:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Turfgrass and clover<\/li>    <li>Seedlings of cereal crops and garden vegetables<\/li>    <li>Root vegetables (carrots, turnips, beets, celery)<\/li>    <li>Bulbs, tubers, and rhizomes of ornamental plants (e.g., tulips, lilies, hostas)<\/li>    <li>Grains, seeds, beans, and fruits fallen on the ground<\/li>    <li>The bark of woody plants and trees<\/li>    <li>The exterior layer of shrub and tree roots<\/li> <\/ul>    <p>When food is scarce, voles also might feed on insects and worms.<\/p>    <p>Moles, on the other hand, are meat-eaters and rarely munch on plants.
