Younger residents who compost are also over <strong>3X more likely<\/strong> to use a <strong>community garden or composting site<\/strong>.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Young denizens<\/strong> of NYC are busy chasing their dreams, which explains why <strong>over 4X<\/strong> of the city\u2019s urban <strong>composters ages 18 to 24<\/strong> say <strong>time constraints<\/strong> are keeping them from composting more often, compared to those 65 and up. Of the <strong>non-composting<\/strong> group, <strong>younger <\/strong>New Yorkers are <strong>over 5X more likely<\/strong> to use <strong>time constraints<\/strong> as an excuse for not composting at all.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Younger NYC residents (18 to 24) are <strong>3.5X more likely<\/strong> to be inspired to compost by <strong>monetary incentives<\/strong> than elderly Big Apple dwellers.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Income<\/h3>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Wealthy New Yorkers making <strong>over $150,000<\/strong> are <strong>2.5X more likely<\/strong> to say they would be <strong>encouraged to compost<\/strong> by receiving <strong>monetary incentives<\/strong> from the local government, than city residents making <strong>less than $20,000<\/strong>.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>High-income New Yorkers with <strong>salaries above $150,000<\/strong> are <strong>over 2X more likely<\/strong> to say <strong>time constraints<\/strong> and <strong>lack of knowledge<\/strong> are keeping them from composting than residents making less than $20,000.<\/li> <\/ul>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Education<\/h3>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>City folk with <strong>advanced degrees<\/strong> are <strong>over 3X more likely<\/strong> to <strong>dispose of their compost<\/strong> in NYC than respondents with no schooling completed.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Non-composting<\/strong> NYC residents with <strong>no schooling completed<\/strong> are <strong>3.5X more likely<\/strong> to blame <strong>limited time<\/strong> for their lack of composting efforts than folks with advanced degrees.<\/li> <\/ul>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>New Yorkers with <strong>no schooling<\/strong> are <strong>over 3X more likely<\/strong> to say they are <strong>unaware of the mandatory composting law<\/strong> being rolled out than those with advanced degrees.<\/li> <\/ul>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gender<\/h3>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Women in NYC who <strong>don\u2019t compost<\/strong> are <strong>2X more likely<\/strong> than men to say that <strong>nothing will make them compost<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li> <\/ul>   <p><a class=\"js-anchor\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LawnStarter collected survey responses from a random sample of 652 NYC residents aged 18 or older via Alchemer and Cint on November 8, 2024.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first 2 questions include responses from all 652 New Yorkers, while questions 3 to 7 reflect data from 292 respondents who compost, and questions 8 and 9 reflect data from the remaining 360 residents who do not compost.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each response was anonymized using a unique user ID generated and assigned by Cint.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Notes:<\/h3>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>This survey data does not stem from a probability sample, therefore no margin of error can be calculated.<\/li>    <li>If comparing NYC data with our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/studies\/compost-survey\/\">national survey results<\/a>, note that some questions from the NYC survey allowed respondents to select multiple options (\u201cselect all that apply\u201d), while within the U.S. survey respondents had to choose one option for the same questions.<\/li> <\/ul>   <p><a class=\"js-anchor\" id=\"final-thoughts\"><\/a><\/p>   <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thoughts: Urban Composting<\/h2>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/dsny\/downloads\/resources\/reports\/waste-characterization-studies\/2023\/wcs-2023.pdf#page=91\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1.2 billion pounds<\/a> of food was thrown away in NYC in 2022 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/dsny\/downloads\/resources\/reports\/waste-characterization-studies\/2023\/wcs-2023.pdf#page=91\">o<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/dsny\/downloads\/resources\/reports\/waste-characterization-studies\/2023\/wcs-2023.pdf#page=91\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">v<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/dsny\/downloads\/resources\/reports\/waste-characterization-studies\/2023\/wcs-2023.pdf#page=91\">er 1\/3<\/a> of the city\u2019s waste could be composted instead of sent to landfills.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New York is making it easier for residents to reduce their food waste with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dsny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">curbside composting<\/a>, hundreds of tech-savvy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curbed.com\/2023\/04\/smart-bin-compost-journey.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Smart Bins<\/a>, and food scrap <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dsny\/collection\/residents\/food-scrap-drop-off.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drop-off sites<\/a>.
