Each number indicates the percentage of the following nutrients, always displayed in this order:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Nitrogen (N): <\/strong>Promotes rapid growth and color<\/li>    <li><strong>Phosphorus (P): <\/strong>Encourages root growth<\/li>    <li><strong>Potassium (K): <\/strong>Makes your lawn durable and disease-resistant (see &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/what-does-potassium-do-for-lawns\/\">What Does Potassium Do for Your Lawn?<\/a>&#8220;)<\/li> <\/ul>    <p>In Maryland, <strong>all fertilizers must have a P rating of 0. <\/strong>However, there are exceptions. You may add phosphorus when your soil test results indicate a deficiency or when you are establishing or repairing your lawn.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-how-much-fertilizer-can-you-use\">How Much Fertilizer Can You Use?<\/h3>    <p>Depending on solubility, a single fertilizer application can\u2019t exceed 0.9 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of lawn, and at least 20 percent of the nitrogen must be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnstarter.com\/blog\/lawn-care-2\/how-to-choose-lawn-fertilizer\/\">slow-release formula<\/a>.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-when-to-fertilize-in-maryland\">When to Fertilize in Maryland<\/h3>    <p>Maryland\u2019s fertilizer lawn implemented blackout dates during the Bay State\u2019s rainy season.
