Today we had several customers in Burke, Herndon, and Springfield all ask us the same question. What should I do to stop these weeds from growing? No matter what part of Fairfax County you’re in, you’ve probably asked this yourself. Weeds look terrible, and this article will tell you the only surefire way to control them.
The key to ridding your lawn of weeds is the lawn itself.
So what is a weed? A weed is basically a plant that doesn’t belong. Any plant in your lawn can be considered a weed. Most plants that we consider weeds have the ability to grow and spread rapidly, and they also have some sort of characteristic which allows them to compete with the surrounding grass. Most of the time, this characteristic is that they grow well in the following conditions: sandy soil, soil without nutrients, shady areas, compacted soil. I think you see what I’m getting at. A healthy lawn – without those aforementioned conditions – is the only true long-term solution for weed control.
Aeration, overseeding, fertilization, proper mowing, and watering are what it takes to maintain a healthy lawn. So before you go spraying chemicals on your lawn, make sure you are abiding by the standard lawn practices.
This isn’t to say that there are certain weed control methods that work in the short term. But, the reality is that the only way to keep a truly weed-free yard is to abide by proper lawn care practices.
