When the two Super Bowl teams square off Feb. 7 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, they’ll be digging their cleats into turf that took more than 18 months to grow.
“This turfgrass has been designed and developed for an event as significant as the Super Bowl and the events leading up to it,” says John Marman, vice president of sales and marketing at Palm Desert, CA-based West Coast Turf, which is growing and installing the Super Bowl sod. “This turf can take the wear and tear.”
The Super Bowl will be played Feb. 7 at Levi’s Stadium.

The turf is an exclusive blend of Bermuda and rye grass. Here are seven facts about the turf:
- The Super Bowl 50 turf measures 75,000 square feet.
- The turf will shipped 117 miles from West Coast Turf’s farm in Livingston, CA, to the stadium in Santa Clara.
- It will take 24 trucks to transport the turf.
- The turf weighs 1,337,500 pounds.
- The turf is 2 inches thick.
- The turf has its own blankets, rain tarps and diet.
- This is the eighth Super Bowl for which West Coast Turf has supplied sod.
